Lighthouse Medical Ministries receives $24,000 from Access to Health Care iFund grant

Oklahoma City, Ok. The Lighthouse Medical Ministries is pleased to announce it has received a $24,000 grant from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and its Access to Health Care iFund grant program.  The grant will be used to assist in funding the Lighthouse Clinic’s Living Healthy even with Diabetes program.   The program will improve the level of care provide by the clinic to the over 200 diabetic patients it serves and allow it to reach out to other diabetic patients in the Capitol Hill area of Oklahoma City.

The Lighthouses’ Living Health even with Diabetes program is designed to help diabetes patient learn how to improve their level of heath even when they have a disease like diabetes.  The program includes education, monitoring, and motivation for those living with diabetes.  As a part of the program, each patient will receive training on understanding diabetics, monitoring their blood sugar and developing a healthy life style including using food portion control and regular exercises.  To help each patient be successful in changing to a healthy life style, they will be provided a glucometer, pedometer and a log book to track their blood sugar level and daily activities.  Each patient will also be encouraged to make a monthly visit to the clinic where their progress will be tracked, their progress evaluated and their regular medicines will be provided all at no charge.

Beverly North, Lighthouse Clinic Director, says, “It is vitally important that diabetic patients get good education, develop healthy habits and have access to the medicine they need to successfully treat their diabetes.  The funding we have received from the OCCF’s Access to Health Care iFund Grant will allow us to do that for help hundreds of patients that don’t have access to medical care.  These funds will be a blessing to change the lives of our diabetic patients.”

The Lighthouse Medical Ministries, Inc., a 501 (c)(3), has operated a free medical clinic in the Capitol Hill area of south Oklahoma City since 2004.  The clinic reaches out to those that don’t have access to health care by providing a wide range of health services. The clinic is operated entirely by volunteers including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab techs, medical students, nursing students and non-medical volunteers.
